Celestion 4" closed back midrange TF0410MR

I'm considering this Celestion 4" closed back midrange for a new Synergy horn.

It appears to be a well made driver  with suitable parameters. The smaller size is appealing as the mounting is much simpler than that used with S2 with drivers overlapping the horn and needing extra baffles.

Parameters

From Celestion:

Power handling: 30w
Sensitivity: 90 dB
8 ohm
400 - 4k
1" VC
fs 400 Hz
Re 5.65

Measured:

* f(s)= 438.70 Hz
* R(e)= 5.69 Ohms
* Z(max)= 48.49 Ohms
* Q(ms)= 12.230
* Q(es)= 1.627
* Q(ts)= 1.436

  1. Hi Paul,
    I am a fellow Melbournian following your developments with interest. I am overseas for an extended period at the moment but am seriously considering building or buying a Synergy horn when I get back.

    I really like the Danley SH50 type designs with the bass drivers in the horn as well and am thinking a 45 degree horn would be the easiest to build (all angles start to make sense).

    Keep up the good work.

  2. Have you actually been able to acquire this 4" driver? As far as I know, there has been little luck in getting these.

  3. The driver shown here is a sample. You need to have an account with Celestion and I have a source. To get hold of more a minimum order is involed, so I may be involved in a group buy in the near future. Anyone who wants to get hold of this driver should contact me via the contact link in the right column.

  4. It should be possible to get the top end of the Pyles to play higher. Have you messed around with phase plugs, or using different shapes for the ports on your synergy horn? As you've found, port shape plays a big part. Unfortunately, it requires a lot of trial and error.

    These links helped me out:

  5. I'm familiar with Centauri's phase plugs. It would be interesting to try and I have the means to build phase plugs, however I'm not sure the extra complexity is warranted. 12 phase plugs would take some time! Have you tried phase plugs?

    My next Synergy will use either this driver or perhaps a Tang Band.

  6. Paul, have you looked at the JAMO 20470 4-1/2" Sealed Back Midrange? Parts Express is blowing them out at $2ea (http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=299-952). If I got one and measured parameters on it, would you be able to estimate its usability?

  7. dubb, there is a group buy being organised at the moment for the Celestion mid you see here, it will be available at a wholesale price! It's a great deal of effort to design and build a Synergy horn and I would think twice about scratching around the bottom of the barrel as far as drivers are concerned.
