Synergy mid driver mounting and phase plugs

An issue that has been raised with the midrange mounting in the Synergy horn is the aspect of phase. Where the distance from the port to various parts of the cone are far enough apart is large enough relative to the wavelengths concerned, phase issues can occur. This can be reduced by having the port concentric as shown below:
 This of course imposes a limit on the number of drivers that can be used. Another way to mount is shown:
 This would potentially mean being able to use larger drivers. Can we add a phase plug? On the right, a phase plug is shown, but notice how the front chamber has almost no volume now. This changes the port tuning and reduces the desirable bandpass effect. On the left is an attempt to bring this volume back with a spacer, but it does appear to be less than ideal because we've lost the smooth transition. We've now created a direct path to the port as well as a detour, meaning the phase issue has now been re-introduced. This is probably not a good solution.
